During Tesla's quarterly earnings call, Musk said cars with Hardware 3 technology sold between 2019-2023 require new computers and cameras for future Full Self-Driving versions that don't need human supervision. The upgrades are so complex Tesla is considering building 'micro-factories' in major metropolitan areas to handle the workload, as service centers would be overwhelmed. Musk acknowledged this will be 'painful and difficult' but necessary. Tesla's CFO Vaibhav Taneja had suggested in October 2025 that the company hadn't 'completely given up on HW3,' creating confusion for customers who purchased cars expecting software-only updates would enable autonomous driving.
