DuckDB 2.0.0 LTS 'Cinnamon Teal' Released

Original: DuckDB 2.0.0 LTS “Cinnamon Teal”

Why This Matters

DuckDB's server mode shifts it from embedded tool to network-accessible database for teams.

DuckDB 2.0.0 LTS, codenamed 'Cinnamon Teal', launched Oct 21, 2026, delivering the Quack protocol, async I/O, a VARIANT type, agent mode, triggers, and an extensible SQL parser across ~20,000 commits since v1.5.

DuckDB 2.0.0 ships as the project's biggest feature release yet, a sharp departure from the stability-first mandate of v1.0. The headline addition is a polished Quack protocol—first previewed in v1.5.3—that lets DuckDB run in a client-server configuration via its native protocol. The new CONNECT statement collapses the steps of attaching and switching to a remote database into one command, and it works with PostgreSQL and MySQL too, not just Quack endpoints. A new remote pushdown optimizer sends queries directly to the remote server rather than pulling full tables over the wire.

Beyond networking, the release adds asynchronous I/O, a first-class VARIANT type for semi-structured data, agent mode, database triggers, and an extensible SQL parser. CLI and Python clients are already live; Go, R, and Java bindings may take a few extra days.

On the support side, 2.0 is an LTS release guaranteed through at least October 2027. DuckDB 1.4 LTS remains supported until late November 2026, and 1.5's support window was extended to March 2027 to ease migration.
