The models cover tasks including speech recognition (Voz), audio enhancement (Clear), PII redaction (Redact), language identification (Tongue), filler-word detection (Uhm), and clip selection (Clips), among others.
Key performance benchmarks highlight the efficiency focus: Voz transcribes 10 minutes of audio in two seconds on an iPhone, claimed to be 4.7x faster than OpenAI's Whisper. Clear, a 9MB audio enhancement model, processes a five-minute recording into studio-quality audio in one second. Tongue identifies 84 languages from just three words using a 2MB model, achieving 0.933 accuracy versus 0.887 for a 293MB competitor. Redact, at 12MB, catches 88.8% of personal data—approaching the 91.1% score of the 2.3GB GLiNER-PII model.
The lab originated from the team's own video app, Detail, where growing cloud API costs and latency prompted internal model development. The company states it replaced Dolby for audio enhancement with Clear and swapped Claude Sonnet for its own Clips model. All models are accessible via Hugging Face and desertant.com, free up to 100,000 monthly active devices with no token-based pricing.
