ChatGPT adds interactive visuals with Intelligent UI

Original: ChatGPT is getting a lot more visual, with the launch of a new interface

Why This Matters

Interactive AI interfaces could lower the barrier for non-technical users adopting AI tools.

OpenAI launched Intelligent UI on Oct. 7, 2026, alongside GPT-6, adding tappable buttons, interactive charts, calculators, and diagrams to ChatGPT conversations. Pro, Plus, Business, and Enterprise users get access first; free and Go tiers follow Thursday.

OpenAI's new Intelligent UI feature, rolling out Wednesday with GPT-6, marks a significant shift away from ChatGPT's text-first design. Rather than static images, the interface surfaces interactive elements — tappable buttons, editable graphs, custom calculators, and contextual diagrams — directly inside conversations.

Product manager Aarush Selvan framed the change bluntly: "ChatGPT has predominantly been a text-based interface," but the company wants to help users "get things done," adding that "the most helpful answers aren't just text." In a journalist demo, Selvan asked the chatbot to "explore how an airplane wing generates lift" and it produced multiple annotated diagrams on the spot.

Other showcased examples included recipe visuals, a bicycle-mechanics diagram, a multi-day hiking map, and a personal savings calculator — all generated inline. OpenAI's stated goal is to make "learning complex topics easier."

Users who prefer minimal visuals can dial them back through ChatGPT's existing personality settings. Intelligent UI launches globally for paid tiers (Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise) on Wednesday, with free and Go users getting access Thursday.
