The Instructure-owned learning management platform Canvas went down Thursday after ShinyHunters hacking group posted a ransom message claiming responsibility for a data breach. The message threatened to leak school data by May 12, 2026, unless affected institutions negotiate a settlement. The breach impacted student names, email addresses, ID numbers, and messages. Instructure placed Canvas systems in maintenance mode and had deployed security patches following the initial breach. ShinyHunters provided a list of schools allegedly affected through the Canvas breach and demanded private negotiations through encrypted channels.
