Media mogul Barry Diller defended OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's character at WSJ's Future of Everything conference, calling him sincere with good values. However, Diller argued trust becomes irrelevant with AGI development.
Billionaire media mogul Barry Diller vouched for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at The Wall Street Journal's Future of Everything conference, despite recent reports questioning Altman's trustworthiness. Diller, co-founder of Fox Broadcasting and chairman of IAC and Expedia Group, called Altman 'a decent person with good values' when asked about trusting AI leaders with humanity's future regarding artificial general intelligence (AGI). However, Diller emphasized that trust may be irrelevant because AI's consequences surprise even its creators. 'One of the big issues with AI is it goes way beyond trust,' Diller said, noting that AI developers themselves experience wonder at their creations' capabilities. He stressed that AI will 'change almost everything' and represents 'the great unknown' that neither the public nor developers fully understand.
