Anthropic announced that Claude Code's auto mode will become the default starting August 14, 2026, for Pro, Max, and Team plan users. The classifier overhead tokens will no longer be charged to these plan users, effective immediately.
Anthropic announced that Claude Code's auto mode will become the default for new sessions on Pro, Max, and Team plans beginning August 14, 2026. Users who have already set a custom default may receive a one-time prompt asking if they wish to switch; those with a pinned default will see no change.
Auto mode uses a classifier that evaluates each tool call to block actions deemed irreversible, destructive, or directed outside the user's environment — rather than relying on manual approval prompts. When the classifier blocks an action, Claude typically finds a safer alternative or asks the user directly. Anthropic noted in testing that auto mode catches more dangerous commands than manual review.
Effective immediately, Anthropic is waiving the small number of extra tokens consumed per tool call by the auto mode classifier for Pro, Max, and Team plan users.
For Claude Enterprise, the Claude API, Claude Platform on AWS, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform, and Microsoft Foundry, auto mode remains opt-in for now, giving admins time to review the change. Anthropic plans to make it the default across all these platforms within the coming month, in coordination with cloud partners, and will also eliminate classifier overhead charges across those platforms at that time. Enterprise admins can enable auto mode as the default through managed settings in the interim.
