Meta Connect 2026: Smart Glasses Dominate the Show

Original: At Meta Connect, the company’s smart glasses were everywhere

Why This Matters

Meta is positioning smart glasses as its primary AI hardware interface, ahead of full AR headsets.

At Meta Connect on September 25, 2026, Meta showcased its smart glasses lineup across nearly every demo. A new camera-free, audio-only model with six microphones debuted, designed to address privacy concerns. It integrates with Muse, Meta's personal AI agent, enabling hands-free verbal commands for tasks like emails and to-do lists.

Meta Connect 2026 made one thing clear: smart glasses are the company's primary hardware bet. Attendees — both Meta staff and influencer crowds — showed up wearing the devices, and nearly every demo on the floor involved a pair.

The standout unreleased product was a camera-free, audio-only smart glasses model. The design is a direct response to last year's 'pervert glasses' controversy, in which critics argued Meta's camera-equipped Ray-Bans could enable covert surveillance. The new model strips out the camera entirely and includes six microphones for audio input only, with no native recording capability.

Weight is notably reduced compared to previous models, making them more comfortable than existing smart glasses — or earbuds, according to Meta staffers pitching the device. Core use cases include music playback, phone calls, and hands-free AI interaction via Muse, Meta's personal agentic system.

The Muse integration is not yet public. It lets wearers issue verbal commands — sending emails, checking to-do lists, answering general knowledge questions — while doing other things. The agent also supports personalization through selectable digital avatars. In practice, the current version requires very deliberate, isolated speech; background conversation caused the agent to misinterpret commands during TechCrunch's hands-on demo.
