CTO Lucas Atkins argued that a widely held fear—that Chinese models could act as a backdoor for state-sponsored hackers—is technically unfounded. 'There is really not any way for an Arcee, or an Alibaba, to make a model, have someone run it in their own environment and for us have any access to it whatsoever,' Atkins stated. He noted that while most Chinese models are 'open-weight' rather than fully open source, the runnable code is largely visible and reviewable when downloaded from platforms like Hugging Face. Atkins acknowledged the theoretical possibility of a model being trained to insert malicious backdoors into generated code, but said: 'I don't know how you would do this,' citing the creative and unpredictable nature of large language models as a natural barrier. He recommended that large organizations subject any model to rigorous security testing and post-training inspection before deployment. Notably, Arcee itself would stand to benefit commercially from any ban on Chinese models, making the company's pushback against such restrictions a significant statement.
