Aptoide, a Portugal-based Android app marketplace with over 40,000 apps and roughly 25 million monthly active users, relisted its games store on Google Play on August 10, 2026 — marking the first time a rival Android app store has appeared on Google Play in the US in more than a decade. The company cited the easing of restrictions previously criticized as anticompetitive. The change stems from US District Judge James Donato's ruling in the Epic Games v. Google lawsuit. Epic sued Google in 2020 over alleged anticompetitive practices in the Android app ecosystem; a jury ruled in Epic's favor in 2023, and Google's subsequent appeal was rejected. As of June 22, 2026, Google began allowing third-party app stores to access its app catalog through the newly established Play Catalog Access Program, enabling competitors to offer Google Play's catalog while operating as independent storefronts. The US is Aptoide's largest market, but prior to this ruling, the store could only be installed via sideloading, limiting its user reach. Google also previously announced it would drop Play Store commissions and simplify installation of alternative app stores.
