Why This Matters
Apple's Siri overhaul signals its direct entry into the competitive AI assistant market at massive scale.
Apple launched the iOS 27 public beta on July 14, 2026, opening its redesigned AI-powered Siri to everyday users for the first time. The update transforms Siri into a ChatGPT-style assistant with device-level data access, a standalone app, and deeper OS integration across all Apple platforms.
Apple released the iOS 27 public beta on July 14, 2026, making its biggest-ever Siri overhaul available beyond developers for the first time. Originally announced at WWDC in June, the redesigned Siri functions as a modern AI assistant capable of accessing on-device data — including emails, photos, and messages — responding to on-screen content, and answering general knowledge questions. With approximately 2.5 billion active Apple devices globally, even a small fraction of beta adopters would constitute the largest real-world test of the revamped assistant. New access methods include swiping down from the Dynamic Island and integration with the Spotlight search tool. Siri also receives a standalone app for the first time. The upgraded assistant is available across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, CarPlay, AirPods, Apple TV, and Vision Pro. Under the hood, Siri AI uses Apple Intelligence, including on-device Foundation Models and Private Cloud Compute. Apple built its Foundation Models in collaboration with Google's Gemini — using a distillation process to create smaller, efficient models optimized for Apple Silicon — though Apple states these are proprietary models, not a rebranded Gemini. Private Cloud Compute is designed to ensure user data is not stored or accessible by Apple. A full public launch is expected in fall 2026.
