Anthropic to Charge Extra Fees for Claude Fable 5 Access
Original: Anthropic Wants You to Pay Up for Claude Fable 5
Why This Matters
This signals the end of flat-fee AI subscriptions, reshaping consumer monetization across the industry.
Anthropic announced that starting July 12, 2026, subscribers to its $20, $100, and $200/month plans must pay additional usage-based fees to access Claude Fable 5, the consumer version of its Mythos 5 model, at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.
Anthropic will require existing Claude subscribers to pay usage-based fees on top of their monthly plans to access Claude Fable 5, beginning July 12 at 11:59PM PT. The pricing mirrors API rates: $10 per million tokens sent, and $50 per million tokens generated in response. For example, a $20/month subscriber who sends and receives one million tokens each would owe an additional $60, totaling $80 for the month. This marks the first time a frontier AI lab has placed a consumer AI model behind usage-based billing. One million tokens equates to roughly 750,000 words—longer than the entire Lord of the Rings series—but AI power users regularly accumulate thousands of dollars in API costs monthly, partly due to the extended chain-of-thought processing in newer models. The shift follows a broader industry trend: coding startups like Cursor restructured unlimited plans in favor of usage-based models, and Anthropic recently moved large business customers to consumption-based pricing. An Anthropic spokesperson told WIRED the company intends to return Fable 5 to flat subscription plans 'when sufficient capacity allows,' citing ongoing computational constraints despite multibillion-dollar data center deals with Amazon, Google, and SpaceX.
