Anthropic announced it will enable auto mode by default in Claude Code for Pro, Max, and Team subscribers beginning August 14, 2026. Auto mode, first introduced in a test version in March 2026, is designed to balance speed and developer control by allowing Claude Code to proceed without requesting human approval at each step — intervening only when an action is deemed 'irreversible, destructive, or aimed outside your environment.' A study involving 1,053 paid testers found that auto mode caught 89% of harmful actions, compared to just 13.6% caught under manual review. Anthropic noted that manual review had become largely routine, with users approving 97% of all permission prompts. Claude Code Head Boris Cherny stated on X: 'The team and I use Auto mode exclusively, and have been for many months. I couldn't imagine going back to permission prompts!' Anthropic also disclosed new safety additions, including prompt injection screening and customizable hard deny rules to prevent threats such as data exfiltration.
