Anthropic Offers Startups Free Claude Team Year

Original: Anthropic is giving startups a free year of Claude Team and $1,000 in credits

Why This Matters

Startup lock-in at the model layer shapes which AI platforms dominate long-term.

Anthropic expanded its Claude for Startups program on Oct. 6, 2026, offering qualifying companies a free year of Claude Team (up to 5 seats), $1,000 in API credits, Claude Marketplace access, and virtual office hours with its Applied AI team.

Announced at Anthropic's SF Tech Week event, the updated Claude for Startups program gives eligible companies a free year of Claude Team—Anthropic's paid group plan—with up to five premium seats. On top of that, startups receive $1,000 in API credits to build with Claude, access to the Claude Marketplace for creating plug-ins, and the option to book virtual sessions with Anthropic's Applied AI team.

Eligibility is straightforward: companies founded within the last five years or that received funding within the last two years can apply through the Claude for Startups program page.

In its announcement, Anthropic stated: "We created this program because we believe the benefits of AI will reach most people through the companies that build on top of models, rather than through the models alone. That makes partnering closely with founders and developers central to our mission."

The move positions Anthropic directly against OpenAI and Google, both of which run similar developer outreach programs aimed at locking in early-stage companies before they standardize on a platform.
