Amazon-owned Zoox will lose its 100-vehicle cap in Nevada on September 25, 2026, as its Nevada Transportation Authority permit expires. The company currently operates roughly 30 robotaxis in Las Vegas — its only paid-service city — and plans steady fleet growth to meet demand as Waymo, Tesla, and Uber also enter the market.

TechCrunch confirmed the change with both an NTA official and a Zoox spokesperson, and an updated permit also reflects it.
Zoox currently has around 100 custom-built, steering-wheel-free robotaxis spread across four U.S. cities — Las Vegas, San Francisco, Austin, and Miami — with Las Vegas as its sole revenue-generating market. Robotaxi Tracker estimates roughly 30 are active in the city right now. The company declined to specify current Las Vegas numbers or near-term targets, saying only that it plans to 'steadily increase' the fleet 'over the next several months to meet the high demand in Las Vegas and other markets.'
The timing matters. In August, Nevada's NTA granted permits to Waymo, Tesla, and Uber to operate commercial robotaxi services in Clark County, collectively allowing up to 7,000 vehicles over 12 months. Waymo moved fast, launching service in Las Vegas earlier in September with 'dozens' of its new Ojai minivans across a 23-square-mile area including the Strip.
Zoox's fleet expansion is also backstopped by a NHTSA commercial exemption — granted last month — that allows it to deploy up to 2,500 vehicles annually for two years, covering its steering-wheel-free design. A separate California commercial permit is still required before Zoox can charge for rides in San Francisco.
