Amazon's Panay bets on ambient AI over apps

Why This Matters

Ambient AI hardware represents a direct challenge to the app-centric model smartphones built over 15 years.

Amazon SVP Panos Panay told TechCrunch Disrupt on Oct. 15, 2026 that ambient AI devices—not apps—represent the next phase of personal computing, debuting Bee wearables that passively log your day.

Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt, Amazon's SVP of Devices, Alexa & Leo, Panos Panay laid out a vision where AI hardware quietly handles tasks in the background, eliminating the need to consciously direct your phone at every step. "It's like point, shoot, return," he said of today's smartphone habit—and argued that model is ending.

The vehicle for this vision is Bee, a new line of ambient wearables Amazon introduced the same day. The lineup includes a wrist band that detaches into a pendant, plus a credit-card-sized device that magnetically clips to the back of a phone. Both passively capture audio, extract to-dos and reminders in real time, then discard the raw audio. Transcripts are encrypted with device-generated keys that Amazon itself cannot access.

Panay stressed privacy as a design constraint, not an afterthought. "You have to give customers that control," he said. "You have to design with privacy in mind."

Panay, a 19-year Microsoft veteran who oversaw Surface before joining Amazon, framed the shift as one where app interaction fades as AI agents handle more tasks autonomously—keeping users "more present" and less afraid of missing something.
