Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky plans to launch a new AI lab, moving beyond his role as an AI advisor to direct competition with frontier labs. Bloomberg reported and TechCrunch confirmed the news. Chesky has been dissatisfied with existing AI models and said Airbnb hasn't struck LLM partnerships because products weren't ready. He has deep AI industry connections, having met Sam Altman in 2006 through Y Combinator and regularly advising him on managing hypergrowth. Chesky helped broker Altman's return to OpenAI after his board firing. The new lab's focus isn't clear but may emphasize user interaction and design, similar to Brett Adcock's Hark startup. Chesky will remain Airbnb CEO and won't lead the lab himself.
