WindBorne Systems raises $37M Series B for AI weather forecasting

Original: AI makes weather prediction better. Can WindBorne make it lucrative?

Why This Matters

AI-driven private weather forecasting is emerging as a viable commercial market, challenging legacy government-dominated models.

WindBorne Systems, a weather balloon and AI forecasting startup, raised a $37M Series B co-led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize, valuing the company at $250M post-money. The funding will support commercial expansion and infrastructure upgrades.

WindBorne Systems, founded in 2019, operates a global network of low-cost endurance weather balloons to collect atmospheric data and feed it into proprietary AI forecasting models. The company has 20 launch sites worldwide and approximately 600 balloons aloft at any given time, including deployments in extreme environments such as typhoon eyes. It is also beginning to deploy aerial sensor packages that convert into ocean-floating buoys upon descent.

The $37 million Series B was co-led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize, with participation from TransLink Capital, Lux Capital, and existing investors, bringing the post-money valuation to $250 million.

CEO John Dean credited advances in deep learning — the same techniques underpinning LLMs — for enabling private companies to build weather models without supercomputers. 'We demonstrated that when you add balloons to the forecast, you get more accurate forecasts, and the value per data point is much stronger than satellites,' Dean said.

Current customers include the U.S. National Weather Service, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Navy. The new capital will fund commercial go-to-market expansion, targeting investment funds that use weather data for commodity price forecasting, as well as infrastructure upgrades including a mesh radio network to replace satellite communications.
