Publishers Build News Feeds for AI Agents, Not Humans

Original: AI Agents Are Media’s New Favorite Audience

Why This Matters

Signals a structural shift in who media is actually writing for — and who pays.

Axios launched 'Axios Direct,' structured data feeds designed for AI agents rather than human readers, as publishers shift strategy amid declining search traffic and rising AI-mediated news consumption.

Axios is betting that a significant share of news consumption will soon flow through AI agents — and it's building infrastructure to match. At the Digiday Publishing Summit in September, the company announced Axios Direct: structured feeds optimized for AI agents, stripping back narrative in favor of data — closer to a Bloomberg terminal than a traditional article feed.

Two initial feeds target corporate clients. The first, already live, gives AI agents used by Axios Pro Deals subscribers access to M&A content. The second, launching next year, will serve as a training source for in-house LLMs. A third consumer-facing feed is also in development.

Axios chief revenue officer Jacquelyn Cameron says the shift reflects broader trends: open web traffic eroding, search shrinking, and 'hyperpersonalization surging.' Publishers across the industry are responding differently — Condé Nast and others have signed licensing deals with AI platforms, while the New York Times is still litigating its 2023 copyright suit against OpenAI and Microsoft. Some are chasing 'generative engine optimization' (GEO) to appear in AI-generated answers.

For now, Axios is targeting business clients first, where budgets are more tolerant of unproven experiments.
