Sony AI's Ace Robot Defeats Amateur Players in Table Tennis

Why This Matters

First demonstration of AI robot competing successfully in physical sports against humans.

Sony AI's robot Ace won 3 out of 5 matches against high-level amateur table tennis players using AI perception, real-time decision making, and an 8-jointed robotic arm. The robot successfully repelled 75% of balls through control rather than power.

Sony AI researchers published a Nature study showing their robot Ace competing in official table tennis matches. The robot combines three systems: perception technology that detects ball rotation and trajectory, AI for real-time decision making, and high-speed hardware with an 8-jointed robotic arm. Against five amateur players, Ace won 3 matches, but struggled against professionals, winning only 1 of 7 games against Japanese league players Minami Ando and Kakeru Sone. The robot's success came from defensive control, successfully returning 75% of balls rather than aggressive play. Sony AI director Peter Dürr called it a breakthrough demonstrating autonomous robots can compete in sports, matching human reaction times in physical environments.
