NERC Issues Highest-Level Alert on Data Centers Threatening Grid

Original: A major watchdog says data centers are wreaking havoc on North America's power grid

Why This Matters

First top-level alert highlights urgent need for grid infrastructure upgrades as AI demand surges.

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation issued a rare Level 3 alert Monday, warning that data centers running AI workloads cause dangerous power swings that threaten grid stability across the US, Canada, and Mexico.

NERC, the top grid oversight agency for North America, issued its highest-level "essential action" alert after two previous warnings in nine months. The agency stated grid operators lack "sufficient processes, procedures, or methods to address risks associated with computational loads." Data centers running AI workloads create wild power swings with rapid fluctuations between extremely high and low power use that can occur in seconds, leaving "little or no room for real-time responses." The instability also comes from crypto mining and traditional data centers. NERC demanded grid operators file risk mitigation plans by August 3.
